Robert Jackson Bennett: Well, to be fair, it is a big pain in the ass. To maintain this world, I have to carefully curate what is now an eleven-page Word document consisting of a 2,000 year timeline, along with varying names of the months, the days, the religious texts. This would be a pain in the ass to maintain even if it corresponded with a real-world history

Date: 2019-02-14 01:15 am (UTC)Each religion get their own 2 page document, if not longer. Because that kind of detail is needed!
And cultural mores documentation!
And the timeline of both the plot, and major events since the creation of all things (gods have birthdays too, you know)!
Calendar! Calendar! That alone is a full spreadsheet.

Date: 2019-02-14 02:26 pm (UTC)The _published_ timeline for my Masks stories (which omits a lot of stuff, including ideas for future stories) runs 65 pages.
A more traditional fantasy universe I'm writing in has two complete novels (one still being shopped around for publication) an uncompleted novel and a novella: 294 pages of background.
An SF universe (several short stories and novels started, a few short stories completed and being marketed): 128 pages of background notes (of course, it starts with Event One and goes a few centuries into the future, so it's far from comprehensive).
Then there's my Gifted Saga (first novel at a publisher awaiting rejection) which I have been working on since 1984... Nope, not even going to bother trying to compile that. :-)
I wonder what people like Tolkien and George R. R. Martin would think of that "eleven-page Word document consisting of a 2,000 year timeline."
