Totally worth it.
Nov. 3rd, 2002 06:00 pmSo we didn't have a full set of people for music today...
...and for a while we were just kind of sitting around and screwing with stuff, but I got bored with that and we started doing some actual music - it's not an official date (no recording, no report) but it was fun, anyway. Anna and Fred started working a bit on Whiskey or the Devil (we didn't quite get to playing on that one; it's new to us), and then we decided to figure out what we could do with just the people we had handy. That was Judas Cart, then Luki, and then General Taylor. I sang on all of those, with lead on General Taylor. (I also did some flutework on Luki - I'm working on a part for it).
General Taylor was the most fun for me, though. The first run-through was in F major. Normally, we do it in E, but I was feeling cocky and everybody else but Mimi - who is our real lead on it - prefers it higher, because it makes the bass and tenor parts easier. Two weeks ago we did it in D, I think, and I barely made it through on lead - it was tight and I wasn't hitting all the notes. (I was really tense.) And two keys higher two weeks later, I plowed right through it. Yay!
I thought we were done then - my voice was really tired, because that's a lot of singing for me - but we started wondering what key Great Big Sea does it in, and Anna started playing their recording of it and singing along on headphones. We tried coming in at their key and octive, but it was just too low, so I jumped in an octive up, and GODT DAMMIT pushed my way through the entire song. The high notes were NOT PLEASANT and there was a lot of laughing, particularly when Zoe decided to jump in. but I made 'em. It turned out to be in G FUCKING MAJOR, another whole step up, and which I've never even considered trying it in before - not starting at that octive, certainly! And I kind of blew my voice but I DON'T CARE IT WAS WORTH IT! ^_^
I didn't blow it too badly. I didn't get the "pop" that means "you're really fucked now." I'm currently drinking an awful honey+lemon+hot water mixture and I'm feeling better. I am NOT ALLOWED to sing any more today, though, OR tomorrow, which is totally killing me because I want to go back and work on that chorus some more. The way you get to rip it out at the end of the song, to just belt it with as much power as you can throw out of your throat - really, you get to show off, is what you get to do - is one of the best things ever. It feels so great.
No, I don't know why either. It just does. ^_^
Then, of course, Anna started singing along with the other (live) version of the song while I was in the kitchen making emergency tea and I could not stop myself from joining in. (Jumping in, of course, at something near F over high C, which is normally a really cool idea - particularly since I nailed it, which is not really too bad for a beginning alto, thanks - but NOT RIGHT THEN and I had to make her stop singing along so I could stop singing too. ^_^
I'm sore, I'm having to drink a grotesque potion - you'd maybe think it'd be kind of pleasant, but you'd be WRONG, it's vaguely nausiating, like drinking super-sweet paint - and I can't do anything with my throat until Tuesday. But y'know what?
I don't care.
It was worth it.

Date: 2002-11-17 10:47 pm (UTC)When I have a cold or sinus problem, I like "Misty Jasmine Green Tea" (made by Celestial Seasonings, and not always easy to find), with lots of honey and lemon. Would it diminish the beneficial effects if you added something to it (like tea) to make it more palatable?
One of the filkers I know gargles with (or maybe drinks?) salt water when his throat is bothering him, and he needs to keep his voice working. (I don't remember if he drank it, but if you drink it, it has to be a very mild solution or it can have some undesirable effects.)
