This is really interesting. I hadn’t expected to get a convincing explanation here, and I rather have. This is an element of class I had been aware of in, say, a Great War context, but not as current.

Neither (technically) Briton nor of colour, but having spent the last 13 years living in the v UK, having an ex-soldier doing extra-curricular PE strikes me about right and having said ex-soldier being anything than paste white approaches "inclusive", sad as that probably sounds.
