However! I can be useful in other ways. Recording? Sure thing! This is me doing several different things with it – schlumping it over in the air, turning it on its side, turning it shakers-down, shaking it, spinning it around, tipping it into (and back out of) my hand, things like that.

The weird breath-like sounds are not me. They’re the seedpods rubbing against each other. SO WEIRD. Check it.

Technical details: recorded on a single Oktava MK319 large-diaphram condenser microphone at close range so the preamp wouldn’t have to be turned up. (Neighbours were running a woodchipper and I didn’t want that included.) Recording was at 44.1Khz mono, exported dual-channel mono and encoded into a 320kbps-maxed variable-bitrate mp3, because there is no twinkie I cannot sandblast. It sounds reasonably like it did when I was playing with it, at least on my reference headset, so there you are.

The pods are called Sea Hearts, and the shaker is... unexcitingly just a shaker. Sorry. I've seen similar styles, with bottle caps for rattlers, here in South Africa.

More about Sea Hearts. There's a shaker made of them on that page, too. Different style to yours, though.

Tracy Birch on Facebook found one a lot like it called a "togo seed rattle” - are Sea Hearts also called Togo seeds? I didn't see that on the page you linked. (Which is very interesting tho', thanks! The pictures of these things all still linked together are cool. :D )

They seem to be all the same species: entada. Here's another site that might be helpful. No shakers/rattles there, though.

When I google-fu'd "togo seed" I found a lot of rattles and shakers, but no info at all on the seed itself. Togo the country has a lot of non-indigenous plantations, though, and it could be that one of their plantation products is an entada sp..

(my French sucks, so I might've missed something, re: Togo seeds in/from Togo itself)

Oooooh, that makes sense. The tent at Folklife had a bunch of things from Ghana too, I think. I'm not sure, but I bet you're right.
