Please continue to enjoy your police state: watch people getting arrested for trying to close their large-bank accounts. The best part is when NYC's Finest grab some extra people off the street - bank customers with Citibank chequebooks - and force them into the bank so they can be arrested for "trespassing."

Full story with video here.

The law they're going to start using very soon is the law against starting bank runs. It carries significant penalties. This, of course, is not the intent of the law; it was used to stop banks from instigating rumour campaigns that competing banks were insolvent, prompting runs on those competing banks, and driving them under.

But intent means nothing, so I'm thinking we'll be getting to that law soon.

(Disclosure: we had old Seafirst accounts that became Bank of America accounts when they moved in and took over. We closed those and moved to BECU several months ago.)

Concur, alas. Cash is your friend. Second best is demand deposits in credit-unions.

Remember Dodge City? Yup. Now.

I guess laws can be used for pretty much anything at all now as long as they have a few key terms in common!

Makes me wonder what amusement may befall when I start depositing my paychecks with the credit union instead.

The process of closing our Chase account was HELLACIOUS. OMG it was so awful. It took months of arguing, it took me sitting in the bank with my two year old for hours, the bank lied to us on a number of occasions. Chase absolutely used fraud in an attempt to keep us in that account -- it doesn't surprise me that Citibank would use the same.

I wonder how many of the protesters actually managed to close their accounts, or if Citibank is still using their money to Citibank's own profit.

wow, did you report this behaviour to Consumer Protection, or Dept of Financial Institutes...if you're not in Washington state, the names of the governing agencies may be different...

my wife and son closed their accounts without hassle...BUT, they did keep sending form letters, and then a couple of months latter, we got a new debit card from them...
