What's the correct word for the metal edge reinforcement used on trunks, anyway? (And why do all the photos I find in google only have metal on the corners? Or are the edges just darker metal?) My old trunk - now used to hold the Hugo award exhibit trophies between Worldcons - had metal all along the edges, and that's what I'm planning for the mandolin case.

Failing that, anybody know a good place for thin brass metal strips? I want something thick enough to take an impact (once cornered, anyway) but think enough that I can hammer it into an edge piece, lengthwise. I have a bench vise so it won't be difficult, just tedious.

I've only ever heard it referred to as edge banding -- and then gets as technical as "dust banding" or "steel edge banding" and sometimes "the thicker, gnarlier looking embellished edging."

I know someone who makes instrument cases and can pick his brain about where to get things if you need it. :3 He's my grandpa so he might take a few days to get back to me and there may be quicker options, but I am happy to check in and see what he has to say.

My old footlocker had not only chromed metal along the edges (and substantial chromed bosses at all corners) but black painted sheet metal sides. There was a large - though simple and not particularly strong - lock built into the center hasp, and the handles were broad, thick leather straps.

In spite of all that it was fairly flimsy. :-(

I suspect instrument cases are built to different standards, and likely different designs. For one thing, the sides would be much stiffer.

I don't know what it's called, but I do know that the really excellent instrument repair place where I take my son's trombone when he dents it or it needs other repair also does case repair (in fact, they have just replaced the handle on the case for his 1976 Bach tenor trombone), so places that do instrument repair might be another source to call to find out what the stuff is called and where to get it.

The True Value hardware store in Blacksburg had a very nice collection of brass strips in assorted gages and dimensions. Haven't really looked for that sort of thing since moving out here, but you could call around to local stores.
