So get this: [livejournal.com profile] filkertom's washroom turned out to have a slow rot problem, and the floor sank and almost collapsed. Tom, cleverly, has insurance against water damage! But because the damage didn't occur in a short enough time period(!), the insurance company told him to go fuck himself.

So he's having a big sale! He's funny, go listen to his stuff and buy something. He's just put out a collection of old rarities and live tracks from the very beginning of his career, too. Clickie!

Our insurance company also does not ordinarily cover slow water damage.

We discovered this a year ago, when our neighbor's bathroom wall caved in. We share a wall with that neighbor, and our upstairs bathrooms adjoin each other. Some defective plumbing design on our side, installed by the previous owner over 17 years ago, had been leaking water from our bathtub and the rooftop vent pipe into that wall. Our side of the wall had modern gypsum board and our neighbor's side had the original lath and plaster, so it rotted through first. Fortunately, the wall studs are rot-resistant oak, so they are still fine.

Though we did not have the disaster our neighbor did, we still had hidden water damage and had to rip apart our bathroom to correct the defects. State Farm did not cover our repairs. However, they did pay for half of our neighbor's repairs under our liability coverage. They justified paying only half because the collapse had destroyed much of the evidence of all the causes of the rot.

Our neighbor, luckily, had a second bathroom to use while the first was repaired and remodeled. We ourselves delayed rebuilding our bathroom. We hired a contractor and put in a downstairs bathroom this summer before the contractor rebuilt the upstairs one. I also upgraded to more comprehensive insurance coverage.
