The Republican Message Machine: George W. Bush Was Not President on September 11, 2001.
"We did not have a terrorist attack on our country during President Bush’s term." - former Bush administration spokesperson Dana Perino, Fox News. Unchallenged, of course.
"I was there. We inherited a recession from President Clinton and we inherited the most tragic attack on our own soil in our nation's history. And President Bush dealt with it." Mary Matalin, former Bush administration staff, on CNN. Again, unchallenged.
September 11, 2001: Bill Clinton was apparently still president. The anthrax mailings: apparently never happened. Astonishing.

Most people are very gullible, but they hate being made out as fools.

Date: 2009-12-29 09:01 am (UTC)The Slog commenter who pointed out that this was most likely a slip of the tongue (ie, inherited recession, *had* attack, Bush dealt) was probably right, especially since it seems to be from a not-fully-edited transcript.
The other one from context seems to be more like 'he kept things from happening since 9/11', which is irritating b/c of course more people than just the President are involved in security, and right, there was never any public closure of the anthrax thing [or if it had an origin internal or external to the US?], though I think many people think of it as part of that general Sept 11th-ish climate of awfulness.
Who was president during the Timothy McVeigh bombing?
Plus (and more to the point for me), who gloats about attacks and people being killed, jeez.

Date: 2009-12-30 02:22 am (UTC)I'll just say I wouldn't go raising distortions over healthcare as a salient defense point for the current crowd of Republicans. That's the issue that finally drove my Dad out of the party, and he's a member of the NRA who voted for Nixon three times (1960, 1968 and 1972).
