Alaska Gov. Palin is one of those "...but I have gay friends" people; her record is not rabidly anti-queer, but she opposes benefits for queer couples, and, of course, opposes marriage rights. She did veto a bill to ban partner benefits for state employees, but only on the basis that the bill was in direct violation of an Alaska Supreme Court ruling, and said at the time she supported a state Constitutional amendment against such benefits. That said, little has apparently been done on that front.

On the other hand, she's a chibi-Creationist, in favour of the "teach the controversy" line of Creationism as a (pseudo)science. And, of course, she's strongly against abortion rights.

Concerned Women for America are very pleased:
Janice Shaw Crouse, director and senior fellow of CWA’s Beverly LaHaye Institute, said,

"It is particularly significant that a conservative woman was nominated for the nation's second highest office. For years the feminist movement has acknowledged for leadership only those women who embrace a radical agenda. How refreshing that now we have a woman who reflects the values of mainstream American women. Sarah Palin is pro-life, pro-marriage and pro-family. She is a woman who is balancing the personal and professional in admirable ways. She is an outstanding woman who will be an excellent role model for the nation's young people. Sarah Palin is chief among equals with American professional women; she brings the kind of balance that characterizes the high-achieving women of today. She will bring to the forefront of our cultural conversations an intelligent, realistic, well-grounded woman's perspective."

Crouse concluded: "Take that feminists -- here is a woman of accomplishment who brings a fresh face to traditional values and models the type of woman most girls want to become."
And that's always a bad sign; they see her as one of them. Similarly, Faith and Freedom Network says McCain "gets it" in their endorsement, which is not good. Reportedly Focus on the Family's James Dobson will be doing supportive interviews later today, but I have no firsthand data from Focus at this point.

Arch-theocon American Family Association's "One News Now" sockpuppet news organisation calls her "a thoroughgoing conservative, both economically and socially," and notes her leading prayers before games in college and membership in an evangelical sports organisation at the time. (This from a popup breaking-news video - it's a flash video, source content here.) Notes that Palin is a member of "Feminists for life," and are uncomfortable with the "feminist" part. AFA notes being uncomfortable with her being a woman (but tries to address it by noting she goes hunting and fishing) and her (reported) gay friends, but they love the anti-abortion. "A strong social conservative, a very attractive lady, very articulate." Amusingly, they bring up Dan Quayle, in a sense of being worried about allegedly unfair treatment by the media - but she really is playing the same role. They loved Dan Quayle; he was one of them; he just happened to be dumber than a sack of hammers. They love Governor Palin; they at least think she's one of them; whether she's dumber than a sack of hammers is still to be determined. But her role is identical: bring the theocons on board a campaign they really don't like very much, and in that, she may succeed.

McCain knew he had to appease the social conservative wing of the party, and he's also cynically playing to the Hillary campers who said they'd rather vote for him than Obama.

I wonder if the Obama campaign might be able to license the music from the song "I'm A Lumberjack" and subtly use it as a bed for commercials talking about McCain/Palin.

If they can create a subconscious connection between Sarah Palin (I oppose abortion but support capital punishment) and Michael Palin (I put on women's clothing and hang around in bars), maybe it will take a little wind out of the McCain campaign's sails....sort of a subliminal guerilla means of forcing the audience NOT to take McCain-Palin seriously by imprinting the image of a comic thereupon.

I started to say no one votes for a clown, but that is patently untrue. I think it was Will Rogers who observed that the thing about political jokes is, they always get elected...

That's a great plan! It would simultaneously offend small-town Americans, women and cross-dressers! As a Republican, I really hope the Obama campaign takes this tack!

In strange news, my sister is a good friend of Gov. Palin. Would be interesting to see someone in the vice presidency that I have personally met.

Hey, as long as she's a very attractive lady, she's fine! (No news on whether AFA finds Joe Biden hot as well!)

And the kids? Coincidence; the kids are named after towns in Alaska, apparently.

Not this woman. Nor, I suspect, too many others. And in the small towns of my experience, more people would just not get it than wouldtake offense. Meanwhile, the crossdressers I know *would* get it and be busily ROFLing.

I'm sure the campaign will hinge upon the transvestite vote, which would otherwise go to McCain ...
