If you replace 'Japan' with 'Germany', and so on for other nation specific words, about three quarters of this could apply to my time in Berlin and Dresden:

Amazing public transportation, I found that my German was a lot better that I'd thought, surprisingly good food, very few problems fitting in with the cultural cues and such. Because the physical differences are so much less pronounced, I was actually mistaken for a German by more than a few tourists ;-)

Travel really is a wonderful thing.
