Our pear tree is blooming prettily this year. Hopefully we will have more pears than usual. The few we got last year were asian pears, and were awfully, awfully good. I went to buy some mason bees at the local bird shop, but they'd long sold out. Reportedly, Sky Nursery might have some more. I'll have to see.

Okay, check this out: a few years ago, beergutt made some mason orchard bee homes for me and I bought the little straw tubes from Wild Birds Unlimited.

We put the homes up and before I could go BUY any bees, they started making themselves at home!

BUILD IT AND THEY WILL COME! This year's crop is currently making their way out of the straws.

I know. And yet, with all those honeybee dieoffs, well, I'm worried about pollination.

Besides, mason bees are blue instead of yellow and don't really sting. They don't really trigger the same panic reaction the others do. Bonus: they're native.

Btw, Sky Nursery still had a few bees. So I put up a bee house and taped the bee hibernation canister to it. Hopefully they won't terrify me. ^_^

They are very, very tiny little bees. I see them more often on itty bitty flowers than I do the cherry or apple blossoms.
