This'll be neat: They're going to implode the Trojan nuclear power plant cooling tower, and it's the same company that imploded the Kingdome. I saw that happen in person and it was pretty neat. A cooling tower is smaller (I think - it is, right?) so it probably won't have that thump that the Kingdome did - unless you get as close as they'll let you. Scout out your viewing sites now!

White Petals

I don't know what it is, but it's pretty.

I'm going to try to get Friday's (oops) CWU finished this morning, but I've got a bunch of running around to do today, so I might not.

Meanwhile, have a quiz, or, in this case, a Wait, what?

Cooling towers are huge -- I think around 500 feet high based on my estimate of the Satsop tower when I was there -- but I think the Kingdome was one of the larger concrete structures built. It was about 250 feet high, but much broader than a cooling tower.

Curious, I just looked up the Trojan plant on Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trojan_nuclear_plant). It's 499 feet tall. I think it's the same design as Satsop.

Ah, here's a more direct comparison, using the slightly-smaller Satsop towers compared to the Kingdome:

http://www.metrokc.gov/stadium/ vs.
http://www.satsop.com/downloads/SatsopAmazingFacts.pdf (PDF)

Cooling tower: 497 feet tall, 440 across at the base, 15,920 cubic yards of concrete
Kingdome: 250 feet tall, 660 feet wide inside/720 feet wide outside, 52,800 cubic feet of concrete

So the Kingdome was more than three times as massive, but cooling towers are still freakin' huge.

Of course, concrete dams dwarf either of these by a couple orders of magnitude. (Hoover Dam -- over 4 million cubic yards--about 80 Kingdomes).

The flower is some form of Magnolia, possibly a Star magnolia, which I really want. :)

I agree, star magnolia, or magnolia stellata if'n you're trying to find it in something official.
