As [livejournal.com profile] annathepiper points out, this is just fucking pathetic. And, idly, the whole $100 rebate in exchange for the Alaska National Wildlife Refuge thing? Apparently they've decided that a $300 rebate was too much, and that Americans can be bought for a lot less than that.

Anna has covered all of this in plenty of detail. I'm just echoing the contempt.

As far as people driving 'gas guzzling cars' goes, it's not the government's business. If people want to pay for low MPG cars, that's their right this is supposed to be a free society after all! Let the market decide.

Remember that the gas crisis of the 70's saw people buying lots of high mileage models, and Japan walked all over the market because they made cars that gave people what they wanted even though detroit didn't. People drive SUV's cause they don't want to deal with all the BS laws that affect regular cars, in short, they voted with their feet. Ever wonder why there are all those new four door truck models out there recently? Because people don't want to deal with those same BS laws on SUVs!

Simple free market economics, something that sadly no one in political office understands.

As for the Rebate check? That's just to get people to support drilling in Alaska, which if the Republican's ever grow a set and just forced through they'd suddenly find out that the majority want drilling there. I tell you, they really are the wimpy party.
