i find that is still almost my reaction to some brands of soy milk, but not to White Wave's Silk brand (Silk (http://www.whitewave.com/index.php?id=34) which i now greatly prefer over the cow version!
it's all a matter of personal taste :)

if you try the others, you may suddenly realize that silk *IS* good...
where i am there are two others predominantly sold "soy good" and "soy nice"
and to remember which order i prefer them in, hubby recites my mantra - soy nice isn't so good, soy good isn't so bad, but silk is best! :)
also, i've not tried ANY other soy beverage that didn't have that reconstituted powdery taste! silk doesn't at all... *shrug*

Soy milk: I won't go out of my way for it, but if I'm crawling across a baking desert and somebody hands me some, I'll drink it. It just tastes like it's missing something.

Well, I do have to admit that I don't drink it that often, and when I do it's usually the flavored variety, if I can find it. Strawberry or chocolate or vanilla. I can't drink it plain. Just...blaeh.

Try goat's milk, no lactose, and to be honest many brands of goats milk actually taste better than cow's milk.

It is definitely good for people who are lactose intolerant, like my mom. It can be pretty good for chai lattes too. Something about the taste of it compliments the chai flavor.

Anyway I've wanted to try goat's milk for a long time, to see how the taste compared, but unfortunately no local retailers carry any goat's milk and the nearest store I'm aware of that *does* is something like two hours away.

I'm under the impression, (and now I have to check) that there is no lactose in Goat's Milk. I used to use goat's milk as a replacement milk for cubs because cats aren't very lactose tolerant.

As for finding it, all stores carry it, look in the canned milk area if they do not have it fresh in the diary section. Usually you have to search for it, because there isn't much for sale, I'd try asking someone working there.

I know for a fact that Fred Meyer's used to carry it in all their stores. That's the fresh quart sized container in the dairy section. It's a white wax/paper container (like milk comes in) only the print on it is green and yellow.

And you can't live in the NW without a Freddy's around, can you? ;-)

I tried some recently and it had a kind of rotten taste and smell to it at first. Which brands do you recommend? I'm interested in trying a few varieties if there is a real difference.

I honestly can not remember what the brand name is that I used to drink. I know what it looks like and I -think- it's by the same company that sell's 90 percent of the canned goat's milk out there (white can, green checker pattern around the top and bottom of the label and I think dark pinkish lettering). Yes some goats milk does smell rather strongly, I don't know why that is.

I've never even HEARD of Fred Meyer's.

I have two local grocery stores: an IGA and a Safeway. There's a few convenience stores and a small-town sort of Wal-Mart, but they only carry a handful of dairy items. Excluding the Big Name nationwide chains (aka Wal-Mart/Target), the only other chain store I've seen anywhere nearby (and by close I mean less than two hours' drive) is Albertson's.

Annnd...as it happens I did a store locator search and the nearest Fred Meyer's is 120 miles west of me.

And I don't drink it plain. I drink it in things. Like, soy chai, or soy latte--it's a good replacement for milk when it's not just milk you're drinking.

I like Silk's vanilla soymilk. I am a serious milk addict/connoisseur/snob, but I *really* like vanilla Silk. I don't drink it the way I would pour a big ol' glass of milk - I drink it in small cups and sip it like a creamy dessert drink.

I tried it because my SO had some in the fridge - his mom sent it home with him because he's mildly lactose intolerant. He let me drink all the soymilk. ;)

yes when you have been used to the liquid from a cows mammary glands your entire life and you drink something your mind is expecting to taste like it and of course it doesn't, then it tastes "nasty" to your closed taste buds/mind. the opposite would happen with someone used to soy milk and then given dairy. it grows on you. people trip over the idea of drinking a womans breast milk, from someone they know, someone with good hygiene, but nothing is weird about a filthy cows milk meant for her calf!

Neither is good for you. Myself, I just don't like Soy Milk. Same as I don't like Brussels Sprouts or Rockmelon. *shrug*

If they didn't call it soy milk, people wouldn't be trying to make the comparisons. But it is very clearly marketed as something that is supposed to be LIKE MILK. If milk is so disgusting, why on earth would fake milk be any more appealing?

I drink soy lattes instead of milk lattes during concert weeks so the casein doesn't gunk up my cords.

We agree. My husband is lactose intollerant but we are really having a very hard time finding it? Any suggestions what store carries goat milk. We live in town and can't raise them on our own.
