I forgot this one in today's Cultural Warfare Update - Paul Cameron and his "Family Research Institute" has a new "study" out. This one claims that queers are drunkards and bad drivers. No, really.

Also, I have no validated source for this yet, but a post on LJ Seattle reports on what appears to be rather severe judicial abuse of a transwoman in Spokane. According to the post, there will be a radio interview about it this afternoon at 4pm PDT.

many gays and lesbians are involved in auto accidents? Perhaps its
because they are twice as apt to drive under the influence. 25% of
homosexuals as compared to 14% of straights said that they drove under
the influence of drugs or alcohol last year. Gays were more apt to drive
impaired than straight men - 32% to 19%, and lesbians than straight
women - 17% to 8%.

"Driving is a serious responsibility," said Dr. Paul Cameron, Chairman
of the Colorado-based Family Research Institute, who just published the
report in the peer-reviewed journal Psychological Reports. "Everybody on
the road, not just the driver, is endangered by this self-centered and
caviler behavior. This is further evidence that gays' devil-may-care
attitude toward sex spills into other areas as well. As Shakespeare's
Pericles warned, one sin 'another doth provoke.' In light of the many
social harms of homosexuality, many documented in our analysis of this
Centers for Disease Control study, the coming U.S. Supreme Court should
overturn Lawrence v Texas, which gave constitutional protection to
homosexual conduct. "

Men were twice as apt to drive under the influence as women. But blacks
were less apt than whites to do so - only 7% did so in the past year.
Black men were less apt than white men (11% v. 19%) and black women less
apt than white women (3% v. 8%).

"This blows a hole in the 'we endanger others because society doesn't
fully accept us' argument," said Dr. Cameron who headed the three man
team that published the study. "Disturbed people endanger others. This
indifference to the wellbeing of others isn't due to discrimination.
Blacks have been discriminated against for hundreds of years, and they
behaved more responsibly than whites in this area."

"This is one of the many findings that clue the public as to why the U.
S. Centers for Disease Control has not broadcast the sex information
from its 1996 study," said Dr. Cameron. If blacks, shunned by some
segments of society, are less apt to drive under the influence, you
can't sensibly excuse homosexuals on the grounds that they drink because
they feel alienated. Homosexuality, drunken driving - both are dangerous
choices for the actor and the society in which he performs."

Give Kim your support.
kimpossible68 is reporting to the County Jail for 7 days tomorrow. Kim is being held in contempt of court for being transgendered and refusing to dress like a man in order to get a job. Kim, a full time student and parent of two awesome girls, has been ordered to pay $1000 a month in child support. After losing her previous job because she was outed, the judge refused to reduce the amount of the support order and held Kim in contempt saying that being transgendered "is a choice, just like being a punk rocker". In the past, Kim has been ordered not to pick her girls up at school because having a transgendered parent will embarass them. (No one asked the girls, by the way)

Kim is to report to County Jail at 10 a.m. At 9 a.m. we want all fair minded people to show up and make some noise. Let's give Kim a big sendoff and show the court that transgendered people have our support and discrimination will not go be tolerated.

First thought is that the data in the study might technically be true, but they've skewed the populations being compared. Comparing gay teenage drivers to drivers of all age groups, and then concealing the age discrepancy, would give those results.

Paul Cameron is a long-time fundamentalist-supported generator of fraudulent studies. Inappropriate subject selection is one of his most common techniques; e.g. his "study" which claimed that over 55% of gay men routinely consumed the fecal material of their sexual partners. (He interviewed a bunch of lifer repeat sex offenders who had had any same-sex experiences, picked the nine most disturbing, and used those as representative of gay men. Also, his definition of 'consumed the fecal matter,' which most people take to mean "eats shit loaves," was so broad as to be the sort that lets me claim that 95% of straight Americans routinely carry around the 'fecal matter' of strangers - because almost all paper money carries microscopic traces of such. Similarly, most Americans be said to be carrying around cocaine, for the same reason.)

But sometimes, he can't be bothered, so he just makes stuff up, like "gay bowel syndrome." Despite this, his material keeps getting recycled by social conservatives, because he says things they like to hear. They have several ways of doing this, such as writing a "paper" which is a survey of other papers, which are surveys of, you got it, Paul Cameron material. And very few people will bother tracing back two layers of footnotes. So it always has to be pounded down again. So look out for this claim; it'll be popping up soon, once it's been appropriately laundered.
