Finale Update

The Finale weed killer works as related to me; I've been dripping in a couple of drops of the concentrate to each individual cut-off-top plant, and it kills them quite completely. There's no spread that I can see - I have healthy, happy horsetail less than an inch away from dead, dead, DEAD horsetail, which is, of course, the better kind.

So if anybody was waiting for that followup, yep: it works.

What about blackberry vines?

I'd probably try Roundup first - maybe in a higher concentration than normal - before moving to this. As weedkillers go, this one's extremely safe - but it's not as safe as Roundup.

Note that I'm not spraying this one, for example. I'm eyedroppering it. The normal method of application for it is dilution and spraying, but, well.

Eric has tried painting highly concentrated Roundup (50/50 water/Roundup) (The concentrated stuff meant for mixing and spraying) on blackberry vine leaves. It killed the leaves that were painted, but the rest of the vine was unaffected.

We'll have to go looking for Finale... where did you buy it?

(The technique Eric has currently been using on blackberry vines has been cut away the vines and then dig up the roots. If there's something that will kill the roots.... )

This is systemic; it can and will kill roots. It breaks down in soil (and in water). Soil breakdown half-life is four days; replanting for food crops is in 10. My suggestion would be to cut away the live sprigs down to near the rootball, then eyedrop in.

It's not particularly easy to find around here. I found it at McLendon's Hardware, in Woodinville. Places that did not have it include Molbak's, Ravenna Gardens, Home Depot, and Lowes. I didn't try Sky Nursery.
