Anybody local got a spare Wintel machine with an IDE controller in it? If you do, do you mind horribly if I come install a b0rken drive and run Maxtor's idiotic little drive tester? Maxtor won't let me return this bad drive without running their Windows-only diagnostic toy to say, "yep! it's br0ke!" And the only Windows box we have around here that isn't a laptop is SCSI-only.

(HI YES I REALLY DO KNOW IT HAS SURFACE ERRORS, IT SAID SO BEFORE IT DIED. KTHXFKU.)

Alternatively, if anyone knows the eight-digit PowerMax diagnostic code for "yes, this drive is, in fact, fucked," I'd take that too. Thanks.

in the maxtor rma, just say that the system doesn't recognize the disk. then it won't ask you for an error code.

i don't have a within-warranty dead disk to try this with right here, but there is a way to tell it that the system shows no sign of having a drive attached, and you can use that. (i've done; you can't get a powermax code that way.)

if you can't find it, call their support # and tell them the system doesn't admit there's a drive attached.
