Where do they have bread (and pastry) trucks that work kind of like milkmen and kind of like ice cream trucks? Where they go around selling baked goods in neighbourhoods - ordinary bread, but also stickybun type pastries and such - directly to people and not to stores? And also, when? I'd be particularly interested in this going on in the late 60s and early 70s. Anybody know?

I vaguely remember something like this from my childhood. Uh, mid-1960s, rural west Tennessee. Want me to ask my mom ([livejournal.com profile] mama_j) for clarification?

I vaguely recalled something from this area but no concrete memory...I did however find this in a google search for history "bread truck"

Talks about a bread truck route and a tasty treat that was sold on it.

60's, most of the country, or rather most of the suburban and rural area's of the country. In the 70's is when this started to die off. Dugan's I think was the last company in the pastry business doing this sort of thing. And Dugan's sold only to people, not stores, and had really good pastries and such. As a kid I loved them, you could even sometimes get the guy to stop for you and sell you stuff, though normally they only would deal with adults :-)

This is the first I've heard of it, and I'm an old fart. Maybe I've lived in the wrong places to see the service, but I've never even heard of the service before... I did used to get milk service until the mid-sixies, but that seems to have vanished, at least among neighborhoods that I was aware of, by the early '70s. Interestinly, there is a mobile knife sharpening service truck that lives just down the block from me, claiming to be a residential service. I thought that had gone the way of NewYork tenement pushcarts.
