People are asking if Trump’s commentary on Sunday is “a threat.” Of course it’s a threat, it’s always a goddamn threat, he’s been trying to get his followers to commit violence on his behalf since he started running in 2015. He launched a fucking coup attempt, for fuck’s sake.

So is this a threat?

Utah book banners have now set their sights on Little Free Libraries, clamoring to make owners of these libraries susceptible to criminal charges.

Yes. This is a threat. It’s an attempt to use state violence against political and social enemies. It. is. a. threat. Really, it’s more than a threat, it’s a promise, and they’ll do it if they can.

On this date I received more hate, vitriol, and threats than any other in my 46 year career as a professional meteorologist.

My sin? I didn’t cut off a college football game for a tornado warning, I didn’t blow a snow forecast. I posted (without comment) a link to a FEMA web page concerning “rumor control”.

Yes. These are threats. How about these?

Vote how we want, or we will hurt you. Read only what we want, or we will hurt you. Talk about only what we want, or we will hurt you. Talk only about who we want in the way that we want, or we will hurt you.

It’s all threats, because that’s all they have.

I’ve written a couple of times about the importance of telling “apolitical” people that if they want to continue to have the luxury of not having to care about politics, they really need to keep MAGA and Trump out of office.

These are all brand new shiny examples of how when you let authoritarians take power, everything becomes entirely about politics 100% of the time, forever. These stories show how nothing else matters anymore – how only your compliant politics matters.

So tell your “apolitical” friends, the ones who find politics “boring” and something they “don’t care about” that if they want to keep “not caring” about politics. Tell them that if they want to have the luxury to think they’re above it all…

…they have to care at least this much, and they have to care at least this much now.

Because if they don’t care a little now, they’ll have to care with all their heart for the rest of their lives.

Or they will hurt you.

They’re saying so.

And they absolutely mean it.
