solarbird: Brigitte Lindholm from Overwatch (brigitte)
I'm giving my 3D-printed small projects storage rack a proper test starting this week. I've made a few different kinds of attachments, and am thinking about more, which is partly what this test is about.

This first test has already prompted me to clear two old projects out of the queue so that's a good start. xD

Right now the rack is only lightly attached to the wall, of course. Final version would be mounted differently.

So far, I've designed and built single and double-height plate attachments that you attach to boxes of your choice, single and double-height shelves, and single and double-height bins. They all hook onto the backplane and have a small bottom-side retaining tab.

The idea is that they should be easy to remove. Grab a box, you've grabbed a project.

These are very quick 1.0mm nozzle drafts, so don't judge xD -

Here's a half-height bin and shelf. I'm not convinced the full-height shelf (which is only full-height in the sense of having a full-height mounting plate) is actually any stronger or better. But that's what testing is for.

Here's a small box attached to a full-height mounting plate. This is just attached with ordinary tape since it's still a test piece. But you can attach larger boxes, as seen above. If I had a box I was sure I wanted to use for a lot of projects, I'd use some VHB tape. And maybe a metal box. I dunno yet!

If you ignore the temporary project tape on the wall mounting system, I think it actually looks halfway smart. The colours are "what cheap PLA do I have handy" but you could print with whatever colours you wanted, of course. xD

If I were that kind of person, I could do colour-coding by project. But for better or for worse, I'm not that kind of person. xD

I'm thinking about uploading the .stl files as a work-in-progress to thingiverse, mostly because it'd be interesting to see what problems (or benefits rly) other people trying it would encounter. Other use cases and all that.
