two thoughts on the old queen
Sep. 8th, 2022 05:25 pmA couple of thoughts on the death of Queen Elizabeth II, from someone who thinks monarchies are stupid and intrinsically illegitimate, one thought short, one thought long.
The first thought is that I should presume the SNP have their shit together for this because it's been QEII keeping the monarchy alive, and with it, the very idea of the UK. If they have the sense the gods gave grass, they're just waiting for Charles's first big fuckup.
Even setting aside the rather poor history of kings named Charles in England - he's Prince Charles. And experience says he will have one.
The second...
I don't know how much of a meeting QEII had with new PM Liz Truss on Tuesday, but one of the actual losses here is that with QEII's death, we've lost basically the last living political link to the previous big fight against fascism, where she and her country were on the right side.
So I hope, without specific cause, that she told Liz Truss that she's seen all this before, including what the Russians have been saying into and during the war against Ukraine, and that trying to accommodate lying bullshit did not work out last time, and won't work out this time either.
Because it's all exactly the same shit as Hitler would and did say in public, in speeches, about "uniting" and "protecting" the German people and peoples, while railing (amongst other things) against the "abortion" that was pre-war Poland, with all the same peoples-and-country-denying language that Russian propagandists on Russian TV use when talking about the elimination of being Ukrainian as an identity, or even as a concept.
All of it. All of it is the same, down even to calling Ukraine an "abortion" in this war.
And she was one of the few people left - and the only person of political heft remaining - who could quite literally say, "I have myself have heard all these words before, because I have lived it, and it must not be allowed to happen again."
I have no idea whether she said anything of this sort to Liz Truss, or even had the opportunity to do so. Perhaps that was the point of the meeting which had been planned for today. We can't know.
But I hope she did.
Because she was the last who could.
