The Portland shooting

WaPo has a breakdown of the Portland shooting. Having read the article and watched the video that exists of the shooting, I'm thinking that what happened is that Danielson (Patriot Prayer guy), went for his bear repellent spray (the closest to mace legal for civilians to own), and Reinoehl (counterprotester/antifa activist) believed he was going for a gun - as per his interview commentary that he believed his friend was about to be killed, in an interview made before Federal agents killed him - and reacted accordingly.

Proud Boys, Patriot Prayer, and other rightist groups are fond of carrying around bear repellent and spraying people apparently unprovoked as they march. They did a fair bit of this on Capitol Hill, for example. (Yes, I saw it myself, via unedited live livestream video from people's apartments.)

So between the past history of use, the fact that this use was reported by many sources on the ground at this incident through the day, and the fact that it looks like Danielson got some bear repellent off before the gunshots, I'm pretty sure Danielson went for his bear repellent to use on Reinoehl, and Reinoehl went for his gun.

Now, with all that said, we can't be entirely certain of the order here. The gas from bear repellent mace is clearly visible before the gunshots, so we know the bear repellent mace was deployed first. But that doesn't guarantee the order in which the two moved for their weapons. It merely implies it. Danielson was younger than Reinoehl, but that doesn't guarantee reaction times either; that's just something we don't know, and probably won't know.
