Three members of neo-Nazi group “The Base” were arrested Wednesday on murder conspiracy charges, bringing the total number of the group’s members arrested to six this week alone.
In total, the arrests of the six men — three from Georgia, two from Maryland, and one from Canada — mark a broad-based law enforcement response to a group that has largely operated anonymously as its membership has grown in recent months.
Luke Austin Lane, Jacob Kaderli, and Michael John Helterband were arrested on Wednesday on charges of conspiracy to commit murder and participation in a criminal gang, the Georgia newspaper Rome News Tribune first reported Thursday night. It wasn’t clear Friday whether the men had legal representation.

Why the chief justice must ensure a fair presidential impeachment trial
https://thehill.com/opinion/judiciary/478809-why-the-chief-justice-must-ensure-a-fair-presidential-impeachment-trial
Conventional wisdom on the role of the chief justice in the impeachment of the president is that he is bound by Senate rules and maintains almost no independent responsibility to ensure fairness. That hands off view is based largely on Senate tradition and on how William Rehnquist handled his duties in the impeachment of Bill Clinton when there was agreement on the applicable procedures. However, the Senate trial is not simply a battle between the House and the president. Rather, the American people need to be sure that justice is done, and to achieve that, there are certain concrete steps that the chief justice can and should take during the trial.

Miller Dismisses DACA in Emails, Mirroring Anti-Immigrant Extremists' Views
https://www.splcenter.org/hatewatch/2020/01/14/miller-dismisses-daca-emails-mirroring-anti-immigrant-extremists-views
White House senior policy adviser Stephen Miller went against many Republicans when siding with white nationalists and other extremists on the issue of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, more commonly known as DACA, emails show.
In emails to Breitbart News leaked to Hatewatch, Miller said DACA recipients would contribute to altering the country’s demographics by replacing Americans born in the United States. White nationalists often promote the idea of the “great replacement” in their propaganda. Manifestos linked to terror suspects have cited this idea to justify acts of violence.

Trump may discredit an impeachment trial designed to acquit him
Analysis: The president is raising the stakes of his impeachment at exactly the moment Republicans want him to quietly walk away with a win.
https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/trump-impeachment-inquiry/trump-may-discredit-impeachment-trial-designed-acquit-him-n1118096
WASHINGTON — As his impeachment trial opens Tuesday, President Donald Trump's instinct for creating chaos represents an imminent threat to Senate Republicans' ability to protect him, and themselves.
That is, the more Trump discredits the Senate during his trial, the more he discredits an outcome engineered to help him now and as he seeks re-election.
For Republicans, the challenge is to acquit Trump while using the trappings of the Senate to present as much of a patina of high-minded fairness and objectivity as possible. And no venue in American politics is more aptly designed to preserve his power than a Senate that has perfected the art of smothering justice with solemnity.
Likewise, no one in the modern Senate is better at working the rules and the Republican members of the Senate than Trump's ally, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., who has made no secret of his desire to deliver an acquittal of the president as swiftly, and with as little fanfare, as possible.
