Today's Cultural Warfare Update
Jun. 22nd, 2007 12:22 amHey, I'm kind of caught up now! Canadians should be aware that REAL Women of Canada has sent out a rare ACTION ITEM; see below. Also, you've got your very own creationism "natural history" museum now; go you. Or something. Americans have a good dose of red meat courtesy of the Traditional Values Coalition digging out some hard-core diseased-perverts language with just a sprinkling of child-rape on top. Tasty.
And now, today's news.
Focus on the Family applauds Republican-controlled New York State Senate for not taking up the marriage bill passed by the Assembly;
FotF happy that Mr. Bush plans to veto any bill expanding embryonic stem-cell research;
FotF ACTION ITEM against Oregon embryonic stem-cell research bill; they call it a "Clone and Kill Bill," which seems to be their new rhetoric on the matter;
FotF ACTION ITEM applauds Mr. Bush for vetoing S.5, the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act, urges readers to thank Mr. Bush for his veto;
FotF glad that Colombia bill granting limited benefits to same-sex partners fails, praying that "the pro-family majority of Colombia would continue to speak out and 'oppose any further attempts to win passage of bills like this that aim to devalue the institution of marriage and God's design for the family'";
A rare moment where I'm kind of in agreement with Focus on the Family regarding a social issue, in that they protest a (dropped) "hate crime" charge against a student; I don't think it should have been brought at all; I am personally very iffy on hate crime laws, and am, of course, stridently opposed to hate-speech laws;
FotF: "Two Colleges, One City Trying to Skirt Michigan Marriage Amendment" by finding ways to offer benefits in ways that don't exclude GBLT people; Focus is opposed, of course;
CBS and FOX refuse condom ads on the basis that they promote contraception; Focus on the Family is thrilled;
FotF upset that Congress is getting ready to kill the Mexico City and abstinence-only foreign aid policies, and are hoping for Bush vetoes;
Anti-gay student activist and campaign worker for presidential candidate Tom Tancredo (R-CO) is outed;
American Family Association ACTION ITEM against adding sexual orientation to Federal hate-crimes law, calling it the result of "a small group of homosexual activists [taking] away our freedoms";
American Family Association's OneNewsNow service accuses Democrats of anti-white racism in blocking some of Mr. Bush's judicial nominees;
Gary Bauer, now of American Values, formerly of the Focus on the Family spinoff the Family Research Council, calls for Federal spying on mosques;
Creationism is showing up in Europe; the E.U. is not amused;
Alliance Defense Fund's paper on adding sexual orientation (which, I note again, includes heterosexuality) to Federal hate crimes law condemns it for "legislative
vindication of sexually harmful and injurious immoral behavior";
Traditional Values Coalition condemns GBLT civil rights efforts as "hijack[ing] the civil rights movement";
TVC: "Should we remind Pelosi that science was used for incredibly evil purposes by Nazi doctors on their grisly experiments with Jewish prisoners?";
TVC ACTION ITEM against the Centres for Disease Control because they target GBLT people in their AIDS-prevention programmes in ways other than "stop being fags";
TVC ACTION ITEM urging spread of a report by a Dr. Sharon Quick, who is with the American Academy of Medical Ethics, which is an anti-abortion medical group opposed to abortion in all circumstances, and has testified in opposition to Plan B/emergency contraception; the report attempts to discredit a 2002 American Academy of Pediatrics report on same-sex marriage adoptions, showing that children of same-sex couples do just fine. TVC links to it, and to their complete set of anti-gay slander pages, including the "all queers are child molesters" newtype blood libel;
TVC ACTION ITEM calls gender-reassignment "madness" - TVC's official position on people with gender identity disorder is that they should be involuntarily institutionalised as delusional - and extensively quotes a Dr. Theron Bowers condemning a recent Newsweek story on transgendered people;
TVC condemns GBLT groups for opposing the nomination of "reparative-therapy"/ex-gay quackery supporter Dr. James Holsinger to be the new Surgeon General; TVC plays up the "diseased fags" rhetoric, even digging up the old "The Health Risks of Gay Sex" pamphlet, which reaches all the way back to the fraud leader Paul Cameron, whose other words include pamphlets calling for the death penalty for queers. (The pamphlet is not written by Dr. Cameron, nor does it quote him directly, but many of the claims are restatements of claims originally made by Dr. Cameron, based on fraudulent research.) "The Health Risks of Gay Sex" includes assertions that queers can't have stable relationships, die 20 years earlier than straights, are crazy, loaded up with STDs, gay men can't control their bowels, it'll all lead to paedophilia and child rape, and on, and on, and on;
Canada Family Action Coalition rails against legalised "sodomy" and proclaims, "The religion and beliefs of the 'sexually liberated' are being forced upon you. But your religion and beliefs are being criminalised if they are not liberal and 'tolerant.' What are you going to do about it?";
Canada Family Action Coalition and WorldNetDaily condemn GBLT Pride Parade organisers for not letting anti-gay protesters be part of the parade;
CFAC re-runs Telegraph article headlined, "Teaching benefits of marriage in school 'is anti-gay'," leaving out that it's specifically a question of championing heterosexual marriage only, at the expensive of lesbian and gay relationships, that was called into question;
CFAC's Quotables declares evolutionary theory to be a "faith" and "not a science," in promoting Alberta's "Creation Science Museum";
REAL Women of Canada ACTION ITEM to flood CBC News website with votes for "Abolish abortion" and "Restore the Traditional Definition of Marriage" to the Great Canadian Wish List vote; deadline is 1 July. The idea is to "keep... the issue alive in the minds of the people."
