solarbird: (molly-oooooh)
Here's an article on the type of pipeline corrosion seen in the BP-run Alaskan oil pipelines. Note that both heavier oil and lower pressure on the lines are seen to be probable causes for the sulfate-reducing bacteria spike. Note also that this article is from last May, and referred to a previous incident that created a significant leak (200,000 barrels, rather than five) - so they already knew this appeared to be happening. BP may stand for Big Problems right about now.
