It's a site about hydraulic construction equipment! But it's a Japanese site about hydraulic construction equipment, so is, accordingly, unremittingly cute. How do they do this?

(Ah, an English-language version here!)

Biked to murksouth, and there, worked in and around the grounds for a couple of hours before biking back. I am not in adequate shape for that yet this year, and I am achy! Achy suxx0rs, as many of you can testify. Also, ravenous. Hopefully that part will be fixed soon. (I had a toasted pop tart. That was a mistake, it made me feel kind of nauseated. :-p ) However, I am now over halfway to Lothlórien, at last.

Tasty to Someone

For no clear reason, I've had Republic of Cascadia things in my head for the last week or so. Here they are, for no good reason.

What happened to Ronald Reagan?
Obsessive readers may have noted that George H.W. Bush was the successful two-term US president in 1980s Cascadia-world, not Ronald Reagan. Ronald Reagan was from the California Republic, and, accordingly, could not be president of the United States, even as a naturalised citizen. Here is a short biography nonetheless.

Ronald Reagan left the California Republic for Tinseltown (St. Petersburg, USA of course - this is the Cascadia world) and became a highly-successful actor and the leading man in a series of westerns and other adventure/action dramas through the 1940s and 1950s. In the early 1960s, as age began to interfere with his ability to convincingly pull off action films - even with the help of a stuntman - he attempted to move in a more character-driven direction, with only limited success. However, his supporting role in the independent film Bedtime for Bingo - an art-house/cult comedy featuring the antics of a confused and disturbed man unaware that he is, in fact, a clown - hinted at things to come.

In the 1970s, of course, most film production shut down temporarily as a result of the general economic collapse. Reagan spent this time working to support various local candidates of the Republican party, and his film fame made him a popular guest at the few fundraisers that were held. He also donated his time to charity relief efforts, encouraging Floridians to donate food and other goods to the less fortunate. However, given the situation, he obviously had no opportunity to act. The action hero's film career appeared dead.

Reagan's big break came when he met the Zucker-Abrams-Zucker writing and production team at a charity event in Tampa, just as the economy had begun to recover, and producers were talking about film again. His quick wit and affable manner convinced them that his small but memorable role in Bedtime for Bingo had not, indeed, been a fluke, and they hired him as one of the many stars in their soon-to-be-legendary hit Airplane!, released in 1981. His career as a comedic actor was cemented the moment he uttered the now famous line -- and, of course, you have to do this in his delivery for the best effect:
Well -- I guess I picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue.
Audiences howled, and offers rolled in. Reagan's 1980s and early 1990s comedy smashes included Airplane!, I Thought You Was the Robot!, What's that Blue Thing Doing Here?, and, of course, The Distinguished Gentlemen, the classic buddy-comedy starring Ronald Reagan and fellow comedic star Eddie Murphy.

Sadly, this last film would be Reagan's final feature-length movie, as he retired shortly thereafter, announcing that he had begun to struggle with the effects of Alzheimer's Disease. He spent his remaining years raising awareness and research money for this brutally debilitating affliction until he could no longer work. Ronald Wilson Reagan, film legend, died peacefully in his home in June of 2004, at age 93.
