Kansas Republican Attorney General Kris Kobach will be forcibly undoing legal transition for Kansas residents starting July 1. This is a nightmare for everyone trans in state, and for people from Kansas who have moved elsewhere, since their documents will be rewritten as well, and will set off another wave of “relocations.”
Several Republican presidential candidates, including DeSantis and Trump, will be speaking before the far-right fundamentalist cult “Moms for Liberty” conference this week. M4L is very much a traditional authoritarian Christian political group, best known for lately-successful attempts at large-scale book bans, particularly in schools, and mostly recently made news when an Indiana chapter ran an attributed Hitler quote on the front page of their newsletter. They’re the sort of group who would welcome South Dakota Republican state Representative Joe Donnell, who callls Mount Rushmore a freemason demonic portal that is spreading communism across the nation.
QAnon didn’t come from nowhere, folks. It came from groups like these right here.
Talking of fascists and book bans, Republican fascist DeSantis’s book bans are fuelled by local censorship groups, like the Florida Citizens Alliance, which is apparently not a survivor of the fleet of anti-LGBT Citizens Alliance groups from the 1990s, having been founded in 2017. But as this thread from Judd Legum shows, their definition of “sexual material” and “instruction of gender identity” means “any acknowledgement that LGBT people of any kind exist at all.” As I keep saying: this movement is exterminationist, and our mere existence is our crime.
Republican DeSantis also plans to “take action to end birthright citizenship,” which legally would require a constitutional amendment since it is, after all, core constitutional text in plain letter language. That assumes he cares about legality or actually wants to do it; it’s mostly more race-baiting from the pig.
Republican Donald Trump, seeking to shore up fundamentalist support, once again calls for some kind of national abortion ban. At the same time, Tennessee Planned Parenthood issues a travel advisory warning pregnant people not to travel to Tennessee.
Yep, this is still going on: For election workers, Trump’s lies have meant threats, harassment and a poisoned dog.
The Bulwark did an investigation to the Furry Panic of 2022, alleging that students “identifying as” cats were being given litterboxes to use in schools. It was lunatic bullshit, of course, but activated the base.
Baker City, Oregon mayor called LGBT pride basically the same as Naziism, defended use of swastika meme in doing so when challenged.
Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott didn’t realise he was quoting and re-tweeting a parody publication when he cheered Garth Brooks being expelled from a non-existent festival at a non-existent town in his own state. Abbot apparently does not recognise the phrase “Dunning-Kruger,” which is, well, only fitting.
