solarbirdIt's been a busy day in Elon's Radical Free Speech news. Earlier today, I thought the big story would be banning @JoinMastodon, the official Mastodon account on Twitter.
But wow was I wrong about that!
Elon's gone on a large-scale purge of prominent journalists who have been covering him in ways he doesn't find flattering.
Here are some of the banned journalists Mastodon collectively know about so far tonight:
@atrupar (WaPo)
@drewharwell (WaPo)
@rmac18 (NYT)
@donie (CNN)
@mattbinder (Mashable)
@micahflee (The Intercept)
@webster (freelance)
@keitholbermann (former MSNBC, currently iHeartRadio)
ETA: @w7voa (Steve Herman, Voice of America) confirmed banned.
ETA: Twitter is now marking links to journa.host - one of the major journalism instances of Mastodon - as unsafe.
ETA: Twitter is now marking most links to Mastodon as unsafe, and attempts to edit Mastodon addresses into profiles are rejected as being "malware."
ETA: So there was a big Twitter Spaces party going on between journalists and whoever else showed up, and it had like 40,000 people in it. Elon himself showed up briefly, early on, fumbled his way through one question contradicting himself while doing so, and then fled He has now deleted the Spaces party. Not just shut it down, but purged it from Twitter. All metadata, everything, gone.
And that's another thing that happened.
ETA to the above ETA: There's a recording of Musk's appearance in Twitter Spaces hosted on Mastodon.
ETA: Twitter Spaces now appears to be down.
Possibly also Lora Kolodny (CNBC) since she just showed up on Mastodon.
Glenn Greenwald has come in with a statement in support of the bans (in a neener neener you deserve it kind of way), if you're wondering how far fascist he's gone.
I also can personally verify that Elon has been actively chatting with fascist propagandist masquerading as independent journalist Andy N*o today. Andy is known for news fabrication and disinformation - particularly through dishonest editing of video - and is also known for handing target lists of journalists and activists to neo-fascist groups including Atomwaffen.
These actions may and may not be related.
Interestingly, all this broke open on Mastodon, which has for the second time in my experience fulfilled the role in news previously filled by Twitter.
Anyway, get the hell of Musk Twitter, it's a fascist hellhole.
