one thing after another

So the assholes at the upstairs apartment at 5046 were throwing glass (it turned out to be ceramics) out the kitchen window at people on the street. So I phoned the police. They come and talk to me, then go next door.

Next door, of course, refuses to talk to them, and they can't do much of anything since nothing's going on right then.

I'm getting ready to go to bed when I notice one of them is staring at our kitchen window from theirs. And I think, "um... that's not good." So I wait up 20 minutes, lights out, to see whether they're going to do anything. When they appear to have gone to bed - and not immediately gone for the door after - I think, "okay, good."

So I go up to bed.

Oops.

Some amount of time N later - I don't think long, but I'm not sure - I'm in a light sleep and I hear... something. I don't know what. I start to wake myself up, but decide it's not the right kind of noise to be worrisome, and stay asleep.

(Yes, I do this kind of thing in my sleep. Usually, I guess right, or on the paranoid side.)

So when Paul wakes us up at 4pm because someone's thrown the north porch fire extinguisher into the kitchen garden window (it bounce off the shelf, landed outdoors - thankfully - where it discharged harmlessly, rather than heavily damaging the kitchen) ... AND someone has broken into Rebecca-gumi's apartment and stolen her laptop, I feel very upset.

I'm still upset, of course. I ... there's just so many noises. I wish I'd gone down to look at the noise. The kitchen window would have been smashed and I'd have called the police, and Rebecca would sitll have her laptop. (Maybe. I'm guessing, anyway. There'd be a chance.)

Three hours of police and cleaning later, and I'm crawling back in bed. I'm only about half here - everything else is just too tired. The glass is bad - I mean, it was everywhere.

okay, too tired, posting now.

The police said that they would "watch" the other house "more closely".

So no. They're not going to do anything.

also, 3 big cheers to the cops for going to YOUR home first to make clear exactly who called the cops. Bravo! Thanks for marking our house!

Hopefully she had all the serial numbers & information from the laptop. Here was my experience after our burglary (where they took EVERYTHING loaded into little Violet's red wagon even). The cops showed up, combed the place, fingerprint dusted several surfaces (completely ruining a $500 carpet which had to be replaced by insurance when they dumped sooty fp dust all over it, and left without telling anyone). This all happened the night before we returned home from vacation, the neighbor was housesitting. We get home - go immediately to the S Precinct. They tell us there is no sign of forced entry, so the door must have been unlocked. We drive back home, view the completely mangled doorjam, and see the CROW BAR WHICH IS SITTING ON OUR KITCHEN TABLE. We call them back, mention the crow bar they apparently completely missed, which is NOT ours and obviously belonged to the Bad Guys who ripped our door open to burglarize us. They say "Oh, well hang up & call 9-1-1."

That'll teach me to leave myself logged in on someone else's computer.

But it goes for me too. Suck. I'm so sorry.

I'm logging in late today, so I just read this (and Anna's and Paul's posts).

I'm sorry to hear this. Total suckage. Whatever possesses someone to violate somebody else like this I have no idea.

You might want to talk to Cathleen.

They were having problems with being burgled over in Capitol Hill and got an alarm system. After that, I didn't hear of any other problems.
