No separate COVID-19 edition today, because there's really only one story I wanted to drop in. It's item 11 here.

In other news, incel terrorism is still a thing, Republicans are still racist and corrupt, white guys can kill African Americans and it's really hard to get charges even when it's on video. So that's fun.

Republicans fear Trump may cost them Senate
By Alexander Bolton - 06/06/20

https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/501417-republicans-fear-trump-may-cost-them-senate

Senate Republicans are feeling high anxiety over President Trump’s aggressive response to nationwide civil unrest, which they fear is alienating middle-of-the-road voters who are crucial to keeping their majority after Nov. 3.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) declared at the beginning of the election cycle that winning over college graduates and women in the suburbs would be key to retaining the Senate majority in 2020.

With the election five months away, Senate Republicans worry that Trump is blowing up that strategy with his laser-like focus on his base instead of swing voters.

“The last week and a half has certainly raised the level of angst over the politics of the presidential race and consequences on the Senate. I think it’s just kind of become one thing after another. Initially the handling of COVID and now this,” said a Republican senator who requested anonymity to discuss conversations with GOP colleagues.

I appreciate the NYT listening to its employees, especially people of color, & suggesting the work culture will change. In that spirit, let me tell how many live in fear of the "Bret Stephens Policy." So many have been contacted by editors because Brett has whined or complained.

This is so common there's now a community of us writers & editors whom Bret has narced on bc he was upset they were critical of one of his many terrible takes. We usually get contacted by a high ranking editor & given a warning or told to be mindful of the social media policy 2/

'Whitestone Wolverine' charged with attempted murder after attack on Black Lives Matter protestors

A Whitestone man who threatened a group of young protestors with a bladed weapon strapped to his arm before chasing them with his SUV was charged with attempted murder Thursday.

Frank Cavalluzzi, 54, was caught on multiple cell phone videos stopping his SUV Tuesday afternoon to yell at young people protesting the police killing of George Floyd before exiting the vehicle and brandishing a piece of weaponry with four serrated blades attached to his arm.

After returning to his SUV, Cavalluzzi did a U-Turn and drove onto the sidewalk, sending the demonstrators running for their lives, the videos show. Video also shows him allegedly threatening to kill the protestors.

The Eagle was the first publication to report on the bizarre incident, which has earned Cavalluzi the nickname “Whitestone Wolverine” on social media.

“No one at any time should infringe upon another’s Constitutionally-protected freedoms and doing so with the intent to injure and maim is criminal,” said Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz.

Apropos of absolutely nothing at all, I want to pick out some highlights of Lindsey Graham's long history of attacking the rights and livelihoods of LGBTQ people.

[NEXT]

He supported a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage. Although many supported that amendment at the time and have come around on embracing marriage equality since then, Graham still believes marriage should be between one man and one woman.

[NEXT]

It wasn't a "go along to get along" kinda thing. He claimed "traditional marriage is now under attack".

He has never walked back these comments or said he was wrong, despite acknowledging that the SCOTUS marriage equality decision is "the law of the land".

Trump Shushes Black Reporter Asking What He’s Doing About Systemic Racism

https://www.thedailybeast.com/trump-shushes-yamiche-alcindor-for-asking-what-hes-doing-about-systemic-racism

During a rambling news conference in which he took a victory lap over last month’s surprising jobs report, President Donald Trump shushed a black reporter for asking how he plans to address systemic racism amid the George Floyd protests.

As Trump prepared to sign a PPP reform bill, PBS correspondent Yamiche Alcindor wondered why the president didn’t have a racial inequality-related plan laid out, prompting Trump to put a finger to his lips as he said “shhh.”

Trump later said his plan was to have “the strongest economy in the world” as it would be the “greatest thing that can happen for race relations,” causing Alcindor to shout out that the unemployment rate actually went up for African-Americans and Asian-Americans. “How is that a victory?” Alcindor asked.

Trump, dismissively waved off the White House reporter’s question, derisively adding: “You are something.”

The FBI Says A Guy Blew His Hand Off With A Bomb Possibly Planned For An Attack On "Hot Cheerleaders"
Cole Carini told FBI agents he had a lawnmower accident, but when agents searched his home they found blood and chunks of human flesh splattered on a bedroom wall.

A 23-year-old Virginia man who appeared to be planning an incel bomb attack on "hot cheerleaders" accidentally blew off his hand with explosives, authorities say.

Cole Carini was charged in federal court on Friday connection with the plot after he allegedly lied to FBI agents by saying his extensive injuries were the result of a lawnmower accident.

Late Tuesday evening, Carinini went to a medical center near his home in Richlands, Virginia with one hand missing, several fingers amputated, and shrapnel wounds to his neck and throat.

"When asked if he remembered what happened to put him in hospital," authorities wrote in a criminal complaint, "Carini told the [FBI] Agents that he was mowing his yard and the mower flipped over in such a way that it [dragged] his hands into the blades and because the blades were spinning so fast it acted like a bomb."

But when FBI agents searched his home, they found a shocking scene: a trail of blood leading investigators to a bedroom where blinds had been shredded by shrapnel and the walls and ceilings were covered with blood spatters and chunks of human flesh.

Agents also said they discovered explosive chemicals and a box of rusty nails that could be used as shrapnel, among other items that could be used to make bombs, including PVC pipes and hot plates.

The six-inch high grass at the home also showed no signs of having been freshly mowed.

An Omaha bar owner won't face charges for fatally shooting a 22-year-old black protester, but has been evicted from the downtown property where he operated two businesses

An Omaha bar owner shot and killed a 22-year-old black man during George Floyd and Black Lives Matter protests in Nebraska on Saturday night.

Although county prosecutors said that Jacob Gardner acted in self-defense and will not face charges, the 38-year-old has been evicted from the downtown Omaha property where he operated two bars, the Omaha World-Herald reported.

The property owners told the newspaper that they have faced threats since James Scurlock died and decided that Gardner will not be allowed to operate The Hive or The Gatsby, which operated adjacent to one another in a building near the city's popular Old Market neighborhood.

The owners said Gardner was late on payments and faced "other issues" in their dealings with him, they told the World-Herald, but declined to divulge details.

‘Don’t Forget the White Women!’: Members Say Racism Ran Rampant at NOW
“They don't want to truly engage with young women of color or people of color.”
Emily Shugerman, Gender Reporter
Updated Jun. 06, 2020

https://www.thedailybeast.com/national-organization-for-women-members-say-racism-ran-rampant

Monica Weeks knew she was taking a risk when she ran for vice president of the National Organization for Women. She was young—29 years old—and campaigning on the first all-women-of-color ticket in the organization's 50-year history. Her friends thought the group was old-fashioned, and her mother, an immigrant from Cuba, was anxious about her taking on such a high-profile role. But recent family events, coupled with the devastating results of the 2016 election, had convinced her that now was the time to step up.

That’s how Weeks found herself in front of a sea of older white women at the Colors Lounge in Melbourne, Florida, in June 2017, addressing the Brevard County NOW chapter. Her voice broke as she spoke about what motivated her to run, and the conversations she’d had with her mother about the importance of fighting for both women and people of color.

“It’s important because we need to give a voice to those most oppressed in order to make everybody better,” Weeks told the audience, many of whom were around her mother’s age. “That’s women of color, that’s disabled people, that’s LGBTQ people.”

She was about to move on to the most relevant part of her stump speech—how NOW could help do all this—when she was interrupted by a white woman in the audience.

“White women, too!” the woman yelled.

“And then yeah, don’t forget the white women,” Weeks replied evenly.

“Just the women with the pussies!” another woman called out, in what seemed to be a reference to trans women. In video obtained by The Daily Beast, you can hear an audience member groan.

“It’s OK,” Weeks said, attempting to press on. “It is important to include all women.”

“All women!” the first heckler cried.

“It is important to include all women,” Weeks tried. “But if you don't realize the privilege that’s been afforded to you because of a difference in color…”

“We recognize it!” the first woman yelled.

Eventually, Weeks was able to get the crowd back under control. But she says the experience made her realize, for the first time, that there were systemic issues in NOW that even she couldn’t fix.
