Monday was kites day, mostly. I did a bunch of little stuff around the house and biked over to Sarah Kaye's house - she's boarding with a couple of people who own and are rebuilding a little house on the west side of the district - and from there we biked down Roosevelt to 40th and then to Burke Gilman. I've never biked on Roosevelt and honestly it wouldn't have crossed my mind to try it, as it's much more busy than streets I'm used to biking, but it wasn't really as scary as I'd expected.

From there we went to a kite shop in Fremont, and then back to Gasworks Park, where we flew the kites we'd just bought for about two hours. The one I bought was mostly round at the head, and had a 15 foot long tail. The whole thing is transparent and I think it's made out of cellophane, or something not much thicker. Hers is a sled-type kite and is very stable, whereas mine apparently suffers from manic-depressive disorder, as could be told by the way it would decide unexpectedly to plunge headfirst towards (and often into, particularly at first) the ground. I'm amazed it didn't break... even when I got it really, really high up into the air - where all the other kites were stable to the point of having their string spools just being stuck into the ground - mine would loop and try to dive for the ground constantly. It looked pretty cool - like it might be on purpose, even - but was a lot of work to keep in the air.

Biking back via her house was a bit longer, but didn't involve going up Ravenna at the end, so was probably easier overall. We stopped on the way back and I showed her the Elevated House - it's a 1910s-era bungalow that somebody jacked up 20-25 feet (no, really) and put two entirely new stories underneath. The porch is still up there and everything, and yes, it looks really strange. It doesn't help that the bottom two stories make no attempt to be architecturally similar - they're very late-70s/early-80s crapboard construction, at least on the outside.

And then last night was all UPCC board meeting. BORring. But important - it looks like we're actually getting some things to happen with the city, at last (and just in time, too); the council actually strengthened one of the UW Master Plan changes, back to the version we'd proposed. (The council staff had recommended a weaker provision that wouldn't, in fact, have done anything. This version would do something, so that's all nice and good.)

And now, today's quiz!

(Two answers for one quiz, because it's depending upon how I change one answer that I go back and forth on.)
