i was going to post the more than vaguely punchdrunk tweetstorm from my 13-hours-and-counting marathon run-in with Microsoft technical support about why windows hadn’t been letting me install security updates since AUGUST directly into the blog, because some of it is pretty funny

and i’m gonna do that anyway

but the seventh (7th!) tech sport did something i specifically said we cannot and must not do and destroyed my desktop machine, which drives all my audio software

(seriously, completely levelled it, i’ve got partition recovery running right now)

(broken boot table, no more linux system partition, no more swap partition, can’t even get to windows loader because grub2 is 100% made of “wot?”)

so i just storified the twitter rant instead of making a fake collection here (it’s pretty ragehappy) and then played the hilariously stupid current special brawl in overwatch, which is all pharah and mercy (phamercy brawl! <3) and double TriplQUADRUPLE kill Play of the Game until i felt better.

because it turns out i get pretty good at smashy brawls when i’m, like, really mad and have rocket launchers.

so, yeah. fun? enjoy my ranty goodness while I’m rebuilding my machine, again.

So, I don't know if you're using MBR or GPT, but there might be a tool that can find your partitions for you. A friend told me about one for MBR, which, according to the website, also works for GPT: http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk

Yeah, that and DD (to clone surviving partitions /home and /archive) have been running overnight. I think I can get back root. swap is extra-fucked tho' and I don't even know why but who cares, it's swap - as long as that doesn't secretly extend into root somehow, I'm fine.

I think, although whether I would have actually had the presence of mind in the heat of the moment is questionable, that rather than posting on Twitter and Facebook about whether what the idiot was doing would be reversible would have been to yank the network cable the moment I saw her even starting to look at the partitioning.

Well, it was too late, right? I was busy looking at the hilarious (to me) photo I took of the windows 8.1 repair tool running under windows 8.1 reporting it wasn't sure this machine could run windows 8.1 - and getting ready to tweet it - when I looked back and JESUS CHRIST WHAT ARE YOU DOING but it was already too late.

The whole thing totally, utterly sucks donkey balls. I really hope that "sport" gets to feel the disciplinary consequences of totally wrecking the machine of the person she was supposed to be helping.

ehh. After blowing things up a few times, and nuking a few drives, I just back up all the things, every day. *Sadly* my favourite ubuntu/debian backup tool is pining for the fjords (remastersys) and I've not gotten around to testing the linux version of my favourite windows backup tool.

Especially if *someone else* is going to mess with my systems ;p

Sure, but I'd just solved a few problems on the Ubuntu side which had been annoying, and just finished a big project (and shipped it, so there was that) which was not backed up.

And I didn't think she'd do what she did since we'd just talked about it a little while ago.
