Swashbuckling Ultraman, in his various incarnations, is probably the quintessential Japanese superhero.
Down through the decades, Ultraman has taken on and beaten a wealth of weird and wonderful foes with such strength and vigor that he makes even Superman in full flight look more like Clark Kent.
So it comes as something of a shock to learn that Ultraman, or his latest alter ego in the form of actor Takayasu Sugiura, is now facing charges for pounding a schoolboy friend of his little brother.
And, if the cops have got it right, superhero Sugiura even had the hide to demand the pummeled boy pay him 450,000 yen in cash as a "nuisance fine" because of the time he needed to thrash him.
