NWCN just reported that all the dead in Oregon are women. Shooter was male, shooting into a computer lab. Are we looking at another École Polytechnique Massacre?
eta: This is also being reported:
eta3: Possible advance notice post on 4chan. Here's the link to the We Hunted the Mammoth summary, and here is a cache of the now-deleted thread. TRIGGERS ABOUND: misogyny, violence, murder. subETA3: 4Chan's ID of a specific person was wrong. We do NOT KNOW whether that means the anonymous person was a coincidence; the post the night before was, after all, anonymous.
eta4: KGW reporting all victims sent to Springfield for care were women.
eta5: Sheriff press conference says numbers are confusing, here's the best they have:
Interesting note: if they were asking about religion, one of the 4chan responders to the threat thread (which may and may not have been the shooter) advised the poster not to shoot "churchies" for reasons.
eta7: 3 Stable, 1 Critical, at Mercy Medical. That's also where one of the victims died, in surgery.

eta2: From a press conference carried by the NWCN Eugene affiliate, but with poor audio: the three wounded who are in critical condition are also women. (update: the three wounded who are in critical condition at one particular hospital are also women. Wounded were taken to multiple hospitals.)
Kortney Moore, 18, from Rogue River, was in her Writing 115 class in Snyder Hall when one shot came through a window. She saw her teacher get shot in the head. The shooter was inside at that point, and he told people to get on the ground. The shooter was asking people to stand up and state their religion and then started firing away, Moore said. Moore was lying there with people who had been shot.

Date: 2015-10-02 02:23 pm (UTC)We *really* need better mental health care in the US. We need to understand what neurological switch gets flipped in such people, how to recognize them and help them before anyone gets hurt, including them. The most important ingredient there is actually doing something when someone shows the warning signs (with the caveat about being careful of false positives). There are, indeed, situations where we need to be our brother's keeper.
