So Paul’s going through Fallout 3 again, and just found a paperweight in a box, and I kind of laughed because ‘hey, here’s something you can carry just to take away from your carrying capacity!’ and so on. But then I realised…

…we all know what a paperweight is. But I’ve never used a paperweight as a paperweight. In fact, has anyone here ever used a paperweight as a paperweight?

Hell, has I know anyone ever used a paperweight as office equipment at all?

I feel like I have used the paperweights I've owned for their intended purpose, but I can't remember a specific time and place. Just a general sense of "At last, this paperweight is doing what it oughter."

A couple of people on Facebook have also said they've used paperweights as paperweights. Apparently they're actual devices. WHO KNEW?

Don't sell paperweights short. In the fantasy novel I'm currently working on one of The Nine Great Sacred Objects of Authority is a quartz paperweight once used by a holy man to pin a demon in place until it could be banished.

Not *that's* using a paperweight as part of your job! ;-)

Se, that's still not paperweight-qua-paperweight, that's using an object designed for some other purpose as a paperweight. Totally different.

Hmm, yyyyesss, I think I've seen them used for their named purpose, although I can't recall a time in an office setting in the past ten or fifteen years. I think once long ago I used one that way at home...

Turns out in the end that several people have, and in a few cases, still do! So there y'go. Paperweight qua paperweight is still a thing.
