Broken hard drives are salvage *gold*, if you can get the damned case open. IIRC the spindle is a high speed stepper motor, and they power up as long as you got the drive controller, super strong magnets...

Almost as fun as dead headphones ;p

The magnets in over the year headphones are a bit more usefully shaped. I have one holding our dryer shut along with a piece of perforated steel sheet. If only we could get a replacement replacement belt for it... ;p
