Worked!

I should really watch Life Aquatic someday. I wrote it off as Dumb when I saw the original trailers, but I have been lead to believe this may have been a spurious decision.

Also, I really liked Life Aquatic. I'm not a huge Wes Anderson fan in general (his stuff is good, but not generally my thing) but this movie is an exception.

I also liked the one set in India. I forget the name, the train one. But Life Aquatic is the one I watch over again.

Life Aquatic is one of those movies that I enjoy having watched more than I enjoyed watching. I like that it's in my brain, now, but I'm not sure I would want to watch it again.

The Seu Jorge album, though, I could stand to listen to some more.

I'm, er, the one who voted to not liking Buckaroo Banzai. ::sheepish:: I keep being told that if I watch it all the way through as an adult I will love it, but I can never get very far before I just shut it off or wander away, eye-rolling.

I have never seen Life Aquatic, but now I want to check it out! ♥

It may be a matter of background, too. I think at least some of it is helped by being familiar with the Orson Wells' "War of the Worlds" broadcast.

It's got a particular sense of humour about it - extremely straight-faced, loaded with sight and audio gags - and it either hits you or doesn't. Like, at the end of the jet car run at the beginning of the film, the noise the jet car is making? It's a really specific sound. It's called dieseling because it's the noise a diesel engine makes when it's flooded. A jet engine would never, ever make that kind of noise, it's just not capable of it.

About 3% of the audience gets that joke, but the ones that do, laugh their asses off.

So I can totally see the whole movie just not hitting most buttons. It's odd. But for me, it's odd in a great way.

Oh: one other thing. I can't stress strongly enough the importance of seeing it widescreen, vs. pan-and-scan. It's damn near visually incomprehensible, pan-and-scan. I'd always liked it despite that, and put up with the horrible visuals. Seeing it widescreen was kind of a revelation, since I hadn't seen it that way since one theatre showing Long Ago that I barely remembered.

Oh, man, I love that one. I love the whole world they built where things like geeky ocean exploration documentaries are global attention getters and box-office gonzo. (In my headcanon, they're in the same world. I guess New Jersey has a twin brother or something who is an oceanographer. The Venture Brothers being in the same world too is not entirely out of the question. XD)

OK, I now need to see BB in widescreen. I loved it even cropped, partially because of how damn incomprehensible it is.

Oh, and much belatedly, this dieseling joke is part of where this came from. (The main part of course comes from them being a successful rock band, but we never hear them do a complete song - they start a gig but Plot Happens - and I decided that was Wrong, and fixed it. XD )

The DVD is excellent, and the extras are wonderful. Recommended.
