What's a wallpaper and how would one (why would one) do whatever it is with it?
(my computer/interwebs literacy barely extends to being able to even get TO LJ and, gosh, link to an image I been able to upload, double gosh, to photobuket)
And while I DO like anime, there is so much of it and I'm so behind the times with it all, that it becomes a numbing torrent.

It's the background image on your computer screen. You can use any image, really. In System Preferences, click on "Desktop & Screen Saver," and then you can set it to any image you have on your computer.

You can also save most images you find on the web by control-clicking on them and picking "Save Image As..." and then you can tell it where and give it a filename.

It is awesome cake. And seriously like 1200kCal/slice or something obscene like that. And those aren't big slices, either. It's crazytalk. And both delicious and moist. So delicious. So moist.

This is on my VNC session at work, since my work laptop has everything maximized so it would be a bit pointless, and my own computer is out of commission. I like Serenity Rose although it didn't really grab me at first. I ended up following essrose, where the artist periodically posted recently completed commissions, at which point I naturally went straight to the web server's directory and snarfled them all to sort through. I'm pretty indiscriminate about images, having spent about a decade downloading everything off of alt.binaries.pictures except the erotica subhierarchy - alt.binaries.pictures.furniture had a surprisingly high signal-to-noise ratio. I tend to throw anything that isn't immediately off-putting into my images directory, from which a script picks one at random when I announce that I am tired of the current one by entering the command "bah".

The artwork is by Shari Chankhamma (http://sharii.com/), commissioned because I liked her style of artwork and wanted to see what she'd come up with as a portrait of me. Since she lives in Thailand, the art was done solely through flipping through my Flickr stream and working off of various pictures of me. The larger version was the main commission, the smaller, cuter guy standing atop iTunes was a silly little bonus. I use it because...well, it's me, and I love what she came up with. I also incorporate the artwork into my blog's design (http://www.michaelhanscom.com/eclecticism/) and the userpic I use everywhere across the 'net.

PS: how do you get photos to show up in comments? Any time I've tried it doesn't work.

I use the usual HTML "img" tag. I don't use the "rich text" editor at all - I disable it - so I've no idea how to do it in that. Maybe it won't let you.
