You recall incorrectly! The South fired the first shot, by shelling Ft. Sumpter, in Charleston Harbour, South Carolina. President Lincoln was sending in resupply ships to the garrison there, and the Confederacy decided to enforce their newfound soverignty. Nobody died in the shelling - iirc, it lasted about an hour before the garrison commander surrendered. But it was the opening of the war.
