I have encountered the most MAN!MAN!MAN!MAN marketing possible. It is the best worst thing ever.

load OUT!

Aug. 17th, 2015 08:30 am
solarbird: (sb-worldcon-cascadia)

Time to pack up and load out! We’re not actually leaving yet – that’s for tomorrow morning, all too bright and early – but we’ve already set up the duty schedules for all the Minions staying behind in the Lair, and now it’s just a matter of making sure we have everything we need.

I don’t know how much I’ll be on over the next week, though almost certainly at least a little. Other than that – see you at Worldcon, I hope!

ps: if you were in the ice cube tray discussion over the weekend, we may have decided at rehearsal that it needed a song and things got stupid pretty fast. XD

So Anna and I were walking to the bus and I referred to a “flotilla of douchecanoes” and we started wondering about collectives for douchecanoe because it’s really only a flotilla when on patrol, right?

So we came up with a couple like “a vexation of douchecanoes” and “a wankerage of douchecanoes” and also along the way “an enragement of meninists.”

But I really think more Tumblr words need collectives and also can anybody top vexation for douchecanoes because I think that’s pretty good.

I finally found out how to enjoy something written by Bach. Now if we could just combine that with this:

...we'd have a real winner.

I kind of want to get a custom-made license plate frame. I've never bothered with anything like this before, but then again, I've never named a car before either. I'm kind of thinking of something like this:

RAPTOR 312 LIGHT

"CF BSG75" is Colonial Fleet Battlestar Group 75, which is, of course, Galactica. (I'm not sure yet of how to do the spacing, either. CFBSG 75? CF BSG 75? If you have an opinion I'd like it.)

I generally don't like my fandom references to be super-obvious. I like them to be the sorts of things that are in-universe and to be things that people who don't care won't notice. Like, I always wanted to build an Angelic Layer control helmet, and just carry it around at cons, like every AL player does at events in-universe. Nobody would get it, but it would be awesome.

This isn't that good, but it fits the aesthetic.

(I'm also thinking of getting this, trimming off the COLONIAL and FLEET words, and putting it inside the driver's side front side miniport window. This trimming should work as long as I'm careful, particularly since it's a vinyl transfer sticker.)

You know you've been running a festival too long when you find you're reflexively doing crowd-counts at somebody's wedding.

It probably didn't help that they had The Heather Dale Band in for the show nuptials, but still. XD

(Hi Ben! Hi Heather! And congratulations to Naomi and Glenn!)

Do I know anyone with working (or semi-working – appearing to work is fine) versions of:

  • 8-track cassette player
  • wire recorder (as in, records sound onto metal wires) (oh I would love this)
  • “cart” player (a.k.a. 2-track, used mostly in radio stations, or 4-track, the home version – either will do)
  • Vintage 78-RPM phonograph
  • Edison cylinder player (please please please)
  • Reel-to-reel player (any audio type)
  • Other old hopefully-obscure audio technologies

If this is you, and you can shoot video reasonably stably (horizontal phone video will do), and are interested in a mildly silly project this week, contact me via the contact page.

We’re watching the extended Desolation of Smaug tonight at the Lair.

Thorin to Bilbo, wild-eyed: Did you find the Arkenstone? Did you find it?!
Minion Anna, as Bilbo: Uh, Thorin… are you wearing your crazypants?
Minion Paul, as Thorin: I have more than one pair!
Solarbird, as Thorin: …and I’m wearing them all.

Another year, another Clallam Bay Comicon! Donna Barr has a write-up here, with several photos. More programming this year than the previous two; Project Wonderful came in and did an interesting presentation about how they work. I’m going to follow up on that.

Next year’s con has already been announced. It’s funny – it’s not so much that the con (still very much a party hosted by Donna) hit critical mass this year. It’s more that it hit that pre-critical mass of people going, “You know, we could turn this into a real and bigger thing.” So next year, there will be a multi-person concom, there’s an official convention hotel, and multiple-room function space, and possibly some SCA tie-ins… yeah, it’s still very DIY, but more people are going to be involved in the doing.

Assuming everybody does what they’re saying they plan to do, of course. XD

Personally, I had my best year there yet. Bringing Leannan Sidhe along was awesome and both our shows went over pretty big. We had people coming back from last year who remembered the songs I did again, we had new people, some of the folks from town came over, and overall we just had a good old time. And sold CDs, which doesn’t hurt anything either.

There may be some video. I haven’t checked it yet. Fingers crossed.

I’ll post a picture-spam post from the hike we did of the continuing-to-be-gorgeous bay. For now, have a picture of a pretty moth I took, while setting up for the concert. Gorgeous wings, don’t you think?

JFC shelves come with a lot of packaging. I was expecting a flatpack, not a box the size of a coffin.

Seriously, look at this.

AAAAAAAAH WHAT IS AAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH

GET IT OFF GET IT OFF GET IT OFF

OH SHIT IT’S FIGURED OUT DOORS WE’RE ALL DEAD

Goddamn, good thing I’m handy with scissors!

Y’know, that really was an undue amount of danger for shelving.

I will not be leaving positive feedback about that, let me tell you.

Oh, right, the group noun / collective noun of microphones question!

You collectively came to no consensus whatsoever. As is typical for supervillains, so we’re on theme there. XD Of all the candidates for a group noun for microphones, most received at least one vote – my nomination, a silly of microphones, being an exception as it didn’t even get my vote because your ideas were better. And there’s a three way tie for best.

To wit, the top three, in alphabetical order, with the names of the people who suggested them:

  • A Boom of Microphones (Pauline, band site)
  • A Feedback of Microphones (Corvi & Jessie C, DW; Clemtaur, LJ; Susan Davis, FB)
  • A Heard of Microphones (Josh K, Russ, Susan Davis, FB)

And only one vote behind, worth an honourable mention:

  • An Impedance of Microphones (Scott, band site)

Personally, I think it should be a heard of headphones, myself, but that wasn’t tabled for question time this past go ’round. What do you think?

Should "Heard" be used for "microphones" or "headphones"?

  • [ ] A heard of microphones, because I am wrong.
  • [ ] A heard of headphones, because I am a clever person.
  • [ ] Okay, what the hell?
  • [ ] Yeah, heard this.

Yesterday’s post about a groupnoun (apparently “collective noun”) for microphones generated a lot of suggestions – 28! – for alternates to “silly,” so we’ve made a poll! Pick your preference.

Each suggestion is followed by the name(s) of the person or persons who suggested it, and where they made the suggestion – LJ means Livejournal, DW means Dreamdwidth, G+ is Google Plus, FB is Facebook.

Pretty much the only places sitting this out were Twitter and Tumblr.

The question of a groupnoun for a collective noun of microphones – which would be applicable here – is left as an exercise for the reader. I might suggest a “redundancy.” XD

A Groupnoun of Collective Nouns for Microphones
(You have to vote at the band site, because reasons; no account needed)

  • [ ] A Boom of Microphones (Pauline, band site)
  • [ ] A Bouquet of Microphones (Kensaro, LJ)
  • [ ] A Feedback of Microphones (Corvi & Jessie C, DW; Clemtaur, LJ; Susan Davis, FB)
  • [ ] A Garden of Microphones (oh6, LJ)
  • [ ] A Heard of Microphones (Josh K, Russ, Susan Davis, FB)
  • [ ] An Impedance of Microphones (Scott, band site)
  • [ ] An Isthisthingon of Microphones (cmcmck, LJ)
  • [ ] A Myriad of Microphones (Erik, FB)
  • [ ] A Silly of Microphones (Me, band site/original post)
  • [ ] A Sputtering of Microphones (Russ, FB)
  • [ ] A Stand of Microphones (Pauline, band site)
  • [ ] A Vibratery of Microphones (Geoff Gill, Google+)
  • [ ] One of the Excluded: Audience, Captivation, Clamour, Clip, Coil, Compression, Condensation, Crowd, Element, Gearslut, Influx, Interference, Neumann, Pattern, Screening, Shureness, Stance (Various)
  • [ ] One not in this poll (but will be specified in comments)

While a song is not a documentary, all of these variations actually happened, the first one repeatedly. In none of those moments some people call “ironic” but actually contains no actual irony, I was at a party this weekend hosted by the Agora featuring the Attoparsec Cocktail Engine, and while it was not capable of making a true kamikaze, it was capable of making one of these terrifying variants.

I labelled the programme card for it, “PAIN.”

Enjoy:

You can’t get a good kamikaze in Vancouver
2013 Crime and the Forces of Evil
or maybe Mary Kaye and the Cosmetics, it’s that kind of song

Should probably be played with banjo or possibly ukelele
Also tuba. BOMP bomp BOMP bomp BOMP bomp BOMP bomp

Chorus:
You can’t get a good kamikaze in Vancouver
It doesn’t matter where you buy your drinks
You can’t get a good kamikaze in Vancouver
Gods know I’ve tried and every one just stinks

Verse 1:
[on beat] Sometimes they’ll swap out the lime for orange
A trick they learned while serving in the Navy
I should be glad at least it is a citrus
But something I could rhyme would be nice maybe

Oh
[chorus]

Verse 2:

The Sheraton Vancouver’s pretty pleasant
Although it’s really really really really really really really really really really far away
The kamikazi served was phosphorescent
That kaiju flavour sticks with you all day

RAR!
[chorus]

Verse 3:
Le Vent du Nord was playing in Coquitlam
Spoken: Yeah, I’m gonna rhyme something with Coquitlam. Watch me.
Le Festival du Bois’s a panacea
The drinking at the restaurant left my face numb
A kamikazi’s not a margarita!

SALT?!
[chorus]

Verse 4:
Davie during Pride is made of glitter
Commercial is a starker raving zoo
The kami that they served me was so bitter
The other girls around me bit ‘er too

ar ar ar
[chorus]
But still I tryyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy…

Who has the job of coming up with random fake brand names for generic batteries and similar cheap miscellany? Who has this job? Because somebody has this job. I want to know who.

Powermax Superdeer. Really? Superdeer?

On a similar note, please enjoy Valium lightbulbs. The best part is how they’re marked 110v on one side of the box, and 130v on the top. But the valium lets us not worry about that sort of thing.

Now, even sedated, I have no idea how you even make lightbulbs out of diazepam, but clearly, Uncle Fester has been ahead of the rest of us.

Maybe it was his idea. Maybe he’s the one who…

…oh god. What I have I discovered?!

Forget the light bulbs. The light bulbs are unknowable. The light bulbs have never been known. You cannot have known about the light bulbs because no one has ever known about the light bulbs. We do not need them. We have the lights above above the Arby’s, the ones that rush by as we pretend to sleep, and that is all that we need to know, because…

Yes. Yes, we do.

I wrote a song for this weekend’s JaegerCon and it will be online. It won’t be the most polished recording ever but it’ll be there.

YOU GUYS WANNA BE IN IT?

Send me a recording of YOU singing KAI JU MEAT on the note of F. Or, if you can’t do an F, shout them – but back off from your microphone so you aren’t distorted to hell and back. Make sure the words are recognisable and give me some separation between the syllables so I can edit them together more easily in the right timing.

The shtick is that the Cascadian Mecha Militia’s Dance Dance Revolution Demonstration team stepped in after the Seattle Jaeger went down. Yes, this is an AU/crossover cracksong.

Want some lyics?

Kaiju Meat
2013 Crime and the Forces of Evil

something in the ocean has a bit of an attitude
kickin’ in the bottom like it’s going to burst
chompin’ all the sharkies, eatin’ all our salmon
steppin’ on the coral but it’s gonna get worse

rippin’ over bridges, tearing down towns
monorail in ribbons, space needle down
jaeger fallen over, pilots in tears
mecha to the rescue, now we’re all here for

kaiju meat
better than bacon
kaiju meat
tasty with fries
kaiju meat
pandimensional poutine
kaiju meat
phosphoresent surprise

[break and turnaround]

barbecue pit boilin’ under the ocean
carbonated soda shouldn’t turn out so blue
colour’s going off ’cause of all of that fission
bubblegum cider made expressly for you

pop it in the engine, turbo engage
five hundred fifty octane, mecha rampage
jaeger fallen over, kaiju went chomp
dancin’ to the rescue, see how we stomp for

kaiju meat
nothin’ like chicken
kaiju meat
it’s cholesterol-free
kaiju meat
pandimensional protein
kaiju meat
hot pockets of the sea

[bridge] [gets knocked over] [because that's what bridges do]

kaiju meat
the champion’s breakfast
kaiju meat
good for ev-er-y mood
kaiju meat
pandimensional repast
kaiju meat
it’s an all-the-time food!

A postcon report for a virtual comicon? YES, B’Y!

I’ve seen a bunch of Bittercon/can’t-be-there-con/VirtualCons attempted, and this one sincerely had way more going for it than any other one I’ve ever seen. I mean, once you’ve got panel programming going? You may as well start selling tickets. Cosplay! Interviews! Wet con suite! The aforementioned panel programming! Room parties of horrible film! (Okay, I’m kind of retroactively including Friday night’s Sharknado vs. Deep Blue Sea suck-off here. Sharknado won.) Dealers! Giveaways! Really short plane trips home! What else can you ask?

I missed shinykari‘s Overly Dramatic Readings panel, which is a shame, because I heard nothing but hilarity coming out of it. tereshkova2001‘s Rocking Hall Costuming and my Kitting Out Cheap panels drew… we aren’t really sure? Because YouTube is weird. But we both had audiences asking questions and we were able to do Q&A. YouTube’s play stats jumped from 0 to 15 to 51 viewers, and more than 15 people looked at supplementary materials, so I’m kinda leaning towards close to that 51, and I’ve seen plenty of smaller panel audiences at Norwescon panels.

shinykari‘s panel doesn’t seem to be archived, which is a goddamn shame. But tereshkova2001′s and my panels are! So here’s an embed for that. Torrey starts the show; my panel starts at 61 minutes in. The two embeds are queued to start at different places but apparently that doesn’t give you two different previews. :-p Nonetheless, enjoy:
