Thanks to [personal profile] cesy for the heads-up -- Hope not Hate, a UK group who've been working tirelessly and effectively against fascist, racist and far-right groups over here have launched a US site:

Hope Not Hate (Twitter: [twitter.com profile] hopenothate_USA)

By way of making a dramatic entry, this seems to have been timed to co-ordinate with the announcement of their epic undercover project: Patrik Hermansson, an extremely brave young Swedish grad student, infiltrated the alt-right and lived undercover in the movement in London and the US for nearly a year, wired for sound and carrying hidden cameras. This ultimately included being at Charlottesville and witnessing the car attack that killed Heather Heyer.

The documentary is coming soon, and the comprehensive report on the international alt-right (for which the infiltration was part of the research) is here:

The International Alternative Right

News reports:

New York Times: Undercover With the Alt-Right

Raw Story: ‘It’s gonna end with concentration camps’: Alt-right executive boasts of a future Europe with Hitler on their money

I love HnH; I've supported them for years and have friends who've volunteered for them. They have a long history working against fascist and far right groups in the UK, through research, infiltration, legal action, anti-racist/xenophobic education and campaigning, and their work seems to have naturally become international as the "alt-right" itself has (e.g. with the "Defend Europe" boat).

So I think their expertise (and the willingness of their reporters to put their necks on the line like this, holy fuck) is going to be a hugely valuable resource for people fighting this shit in the US too.

The GOP is trying to repeal the ACA and cut Medicaid again. They almost have the votes to do it. We have the chance to stop them from getting the votes, if we act *right now*. We need to put overwhelming pressure on every senator to vote no.

Age: 55 (Good G-d, how did that happen?)
Location: Seattle, WA

Describe yourself in five sentences or less: I’m a New York transplant living in Seattle with two cats and way too many books. I am creative and opinionated and still express myself like a native New Yorker, which makes some Seattleites uncomfortable despite my best efforts. I am a theater geek, a movie buff, a lover of tabletop and board games, a reader, a writer and a jeweler.

Top 5 fandoms: I’m a second-wave slash writer (second-wave as in: the first wave was in the early 1970s, the second in the mid-’80s to early ’90’s; everyone else came after) who hasn’t written fanfic in a while, but when I was doing that it was Star Trek, Starsky & Hutch and, more recently, Doctor Who (see my fanfic journal at [personal profile] scarlett_key). I have loved watching and discussing Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The X-Files, Downton Abbey, Game of Thrones, so many more. How do you pick just five?

I mostly post about: My personal life, which also tends to be sprinkled with bits about politics, the science fiction community, movies, theater, books, travel, cats, my family, writing and observations about life in general.

I rarely post about: sports, math, the giant hornbeam tree in front of my condo, jackalopes, and my collection of porcelain hands (yes, really).

My three last posts were about: I occasionally do the Friday Five so this morning’s post was answering last week’s questions, two particularly striking dreams, and discovering the pile of get-well cards I received when I was in the hospital last year.

How often do you post? I currently post about once a week, though I’m aiming for better.

How about commenting? I try to comment on at least half to two-thirds of the posts that I read.

The Idiot-in-Chief this week made some surprisingly helpful deals with Congressional Democrats. Although -- based on subsequent tweets -- it's not clear if he understood what he was agreeing to or whether he'll stick with them.

How has your week been?

Housekeeping (the usual stuff)
Reminder that we have a suggestion post if there’s a topic that you’d like to see discussed but would like to ask the mods to look into. This can be anything from general information, or a how-to-do-a-thing, or something you may want to discuss as a community. Folks are welcome to post directly to the comm as always, but if you’re not comfortable/don’t have spoons, we can help too.

As we don't always get the time to pull things out of the suggestions post into their own separate posts, it may be worth checking every week (or tracking the post) to see if there's any new information you're interested in.

Also if you need help with tags, PM [personal profile] redbird, who is our tag guru. Both [personal profile] tassosss and I are very grateful for the help.

It's time for another question thread!

The rules:

- You may ask any dev-related question you have in a comment. (It doesn't even need to be about Dreamwidth, although if it involves a language/library/framework/database Dreamwidth doesn't use, you will probably get answers pointing that out and suggesting a better place to ask.)
- You may also answer any question, using the guidelines given in To Answer, Or Not To Answer and in this comment thread.

Main Fandoms: Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, RPF and FPF both, but I'm just more into RPF
Other Fandoms: 24, Game of Thrones, Sherlock (BBC), Firefly, Battlestar Galactica, The Killing (Danish Original)
Fannish Interests: Fic, mostly.
OTPs and Ships: I can get invested into a number of pairings if a fic is well written :) Longtime favorites include Sean Bean/Viggo Mortensen, Richard Armitage/Graham McTavish, Jack Bauer/Chloe O'Brian, Jack Bauer/Tony Almeida. I'm currently writing a Richard Armitage/Orlando Bloom fic with a friend, you can find it here at AO3 if you're interested!

Favourite Movies: mostly Wes Andersen and Lars von Trier movies
Current/recent TV Shows: Orphan Black, Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, Dear White People, The Fall, Dicte, Call the Midwife. I'd love to see 'The Handmaid's Tale' and am looking foward to the second season of 'Topf of the Lake'.
Other interests: books, design, politics (European, mostly), environmental issues

Other Info: I've only recently moved over from LJ to DW and my subscription page is still mind-numbingly empty. I'd love to widen my circle here, so to speak, and am always happy to engage in fandom-chatter. Fic recs are also very welcome! Just talk to me :)

Arashi Fandom Survey!

[personal profile] tapsilogue posting in [community profile] arashi_off
UPDATE 9/10/2017 12:39AM: The survey will close by tomorrow at 1PM Hong Kong/Manila time. ♥

So far, there are 720+ responses!! I'm feeling slightly overwhelmed, but also so touched that you'd all take the time to answer! I don't think we've really had a chance to regroup as a fandom and see how we're doing as a community, so I'm glad I've been getting feedback about the survey opening discussions among fans and getting you all to reflect on your choices :D

Please continue to share it! Yay!

------

Hi, everyone!

I've been interested in the Arashi fandom community for a while now, having been part of it for the last decade or so. :) I'm interested in learning about the current makeup of the community, so I designed this survey to learn more about all of you! There are no right or wrong answers, it's all about what YOU think and feel about Arashi ♥ This is all just for fun and because I want to practice running data and making correlations! LOL. But I've pretested it, and it's a lot of fun answer!

A few things:

  • All your answers will be kept CONFIDENTIAL and ANONYMOUS. When I report back with the results, I will not give any usernames or e-mail addresses identifying any of the respondents. I will only go back to your answers if you want to be interviewed for Part 2 of this fandom research, which will mostly have open-ended questions. So please answer as honestly as possible!

  • It's all multiple question-type answers so you don't have to write an essay or anything.

  • This should take around 15-30 minutes depending on how set your opinions about Arashi are. But again it's fun to answer :D

  • Please please please send this to your friends who are Arashi fans! Post the link in on Tumblr, share it on Facebook/Twitter, etc. The more data we can gather, the better ^_^

  • Again, please answer everything honestly!

Okay, enough rambling. Please go answer the survey! You can leave a comment here if you have any suggestions or questions about this.
